Fiji is probably the best place for finding small secluded beach resorts. There are over 300 islands in the group and its speciality is small beach resorts on uninhabited islands with palm fringed beaches, turquoise lagoons and excellent snorkelling. There are plenty of larger beach resorts for families on the main island.

Hawaii beaches are generally long sweeping stretches of sand lined with large resorts and condominium complexes. Most beaches are excellent for swimming, body surfing and fooling around - few have good snorkelling and most are more crowded than its South Pacific neighbours. Waikiki is renowned for its bustling atmosphere and nightlife.

The Cook Islands are more compact with tourism focusing on the main island of Rarotonga which has numerous quiet beaches and plenty of small self contained beach bungalows ideal for couples. The most scenic beaches are on the uninhabited coral islands surrounding Aitutaki Island where there are a handful of small resorts and beach bungalows.

Samoa is probably the best place for exploring remote beaches in the South Pacific, particularly on the south coast of Upolu where you'll find the best beach walk in the South Pacific. There are only a few luxury beach resorts in Samoa, the largest with only 22 rooms. The charm of Samoa is its many traditional beach bungalows run by local villagers which offer excellent value for money.

Tonga has some excellent beaches, particularly on the offshore islands around Tongatapu and in the Ha'apai Group where the snorkelling is good. Unfortunately there are only a few beach resorts and budget hostels in the country so to get to see the best beaches, you'll need your spirit of adventure or perhaps your own yacht!

Tahiti has a good variety of beach resorts and its speciality is the over the water lagoon bungalows. The beaches on the main island of Tahiti are few and far between and although on Moorea there are more beaches, the quality is only ordinary. The best beaches are in the remote Tuamotu Group with small lagoon islands and excellent snorkelling.
