A note of warning: Traversing the international date line. This puts Fiji and Samoa one day ahead of Tonga, Cook Islands, Tahiti and Hawaii which makes things mighty confusing! Do check your flight schedules carefully.

Networks in the region are extensive making it possible to fly to almost every small island destination, BUT, flight frequencies are often only weekly and the large number of small airlines operating the different routes can make planning your itinerary a frustrating exercise. There are no direct flight connections between Cook Islands and Tonga or Samoa, or from Tahiti to Tonga or Samoa. These routes must transfer via Fiji, New Zealand or Australia.

Most airlines, including the smaller airlines of the South Pacific, are part of one of two major airline networks and seat sharing options / code-share are common. So, although you book Qantas, for example, you might to end up flying with Air Pacific.

The most popular route across the Pacific is with Air New Zealand = Auckland>Fiji>Cook Island/Tahiti>LA.
The alternative route across the Pacific is also with Air New Zealand = Auckland>Tonga>Samoa>LA
