The South Pacific is a relatively cheap destination to visit. Unfortunately the restricted economies of scale of these tiny island nations and isolation from the world of commerce has made imports quite expensive. Stick to local foods and products and you should have a reasonably inexpensive holiday. Tipping is not encouraged. Most credit cards and travellers cheques are readily accepted at resorts, restaurants and shops and there are ATM machines in all major cities.
The climate in the South Pacific is tropical and warm and sunny rear-round with average day time temperatures between 25C and 32C. Slight variations occur between island nations depending on their southern latitude from the equator.
South Pacific Weather
Air New Zealand is the major airline serving the South Pacific and has connecting flights between New Zealand and North America / Europe. Air Pacific offers flights between Australia and Fiji and on to other island nations. The new arrival to Pacific travel is Virgin / Pacific Blue and cheap flights between Australia and New Zealand to Fiji, Cooks, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu are readily available.
South Pacific Flights & Airlines
Travel Insurance is advisable for any visit to Fiji. Local private doctors are very good but hospitals are generally short staffed and under-funded and can handle basic emergencies only. Mercy flights to Australia or New Zealand are provided in extreme cases.
English is widely spoken although there are numerous Fijian dialects with the Indians speaking a localised form of Hindi
Crime is unfortunately soaring with bank robberies, rape and even murders hitting the news on a weekly basis. Such is the problem that Tourist Police have been established to help protect the tourist industry.
Electricity is 240 volts.

Travellers with Disabilities
The South Pacific has poor facilities for wheelchair access - the streets in towns are uneven with no ramps on the pavements for crossings and there are public buildings such as cinemas, libraries, and toilets have no provisions for wheelchairs. Public buses will also cause a problem for those unable to walk. There are several resorts that offer rooms designed for those with wheelchairs and easily accessible restaurants.
Media and Books
The Media in the South Pacific enjoys freedom of speech and independence from its governments. There are several travel guide books dedicated to Fiji. The best of these is the South Pacific Handbook published by Moon Travel Handbooks. Less informative is the hugely popular Lonely Planet which offers lots in the way of accommodation but is a rather bland and unimaginative account of travel.
