South Pacific Small Island Resorts

Only Fiji, Tonga and Tahiti have lots of small island resorts and the ability to explore by island hopping. These small islands are small - usually less than a km in circumference and taking less than fifteen minutes to walk around. Some will by low lying coral atolls, others protruding volcanic peaks. Some will share the island with a local village or in a few rare cases, with another resort, but on the whole, most resorts are the only buildings on the otherwise uninhabited island.

Fiji has lots of small island resorts, many of which lie in a compact group and an extended chain of islands. Transportation between these islands is excellent making island hopping the perfect way to explore.

Tonga has a similar collection of islands, although these are less developed for tourism with only a handful of places to stay. For those who have either the time to take local boats from island to island, or the money to charter a boat, Tonga is a dream come true.

Tahiti has lots of large lagoon islands in the Society Group, each one surrounded by tiny uninhabited coral atolls. These atolls make great day trips and island hopping from one lagoon island to another is a great way of exploring the group.

The Cook Islands has only one such island with accommodation - on the Lagoon island of Aitutaki where there are a string of otherwise uninhabited islands with gorgeous beaches. Off Muri Beach on the main island of Rarotonga are four tiny islands within the lagoon with nice beaches - these can be reached by kayak or by wading through the lagoon at low tide.

Samoa has two small islands with accommodation off the main island of Upolu. One is uninhabited and the other has a few small traditional villages.

Hawaii tourism is limited to the six large islands - the small uninhabited atolls stretching out to Midway are strictly off-limits - these are bird nesting sanctuaries and military restriction zones.
