Samoa has some excellent winter and summer surfing off both Upolu and Savaii. There are a few specialist small resorts with all the best boats and guides as well as several budget style accommodations to hang out at. The best thing about Samoa is few crowds and a great surf atmosphere.

Hawaii is the surfing capital of the world - Oahu's north shore has great waves, whilst the pose and pomp of Waikiki should not be neglected. The most challenging waves are at Hanalei Bay on Kauai and Ma'alaea Bay on Maui. Hawaii is also a great place to learn surfing with lots of surf schools and good beach breaks. The downside is that surfing breaks are rather crowded and the locals are unwelcoming to outsiders.

Fiji, on the other hand, is not suited to beginners. Here you'll find some of the most challenging surfing in the world but, being reef breaks, are also very dangerous. There are a handful of specialist surfing resorts near the breaks of Namotu (Mamanuca) and Beqa (Southern Islands) and cheaper options for those on a budget around the main island if Viti Levu.

Tahiti has some excellent beach surfing off the black sand beaches on the north and south shore of Tahiti, but there are no specialist hostels or resorts catering for surfers. You'll need to stay in either Papeete or along the coast and hire a car.

Tonga has two surfing spots, both over reefs off the main island of Tongatapu. The surf here is not as reliable as either Samoa, Tahiti or Fiji, but at times it can be good. There are a couple of basic guesthouses and hostels offering boat rides to the surf.

The Cook Islands has a couple of fun surf spots along passages around Rarotonga. Breaks however are unreliable and there are no surf boats - its a short paddle to the reef from the beach.
