South Pacific Snorkelling Holidays

south pacific pictures map
South Pacific snorkelling holidays are amongst the very best in the world. Not only do you have perpetually warm water (around 26C) and no crowds, but some of the best soft corals in the world and lots of marine life right off the beach.

Tahiti has lots of large lagoon islands in the Society Group, each one surrounded by tiny uninhabited coral atolls. These atolls make great fish traps and buzz with both small colourful reef fish and larger pelagics including manta rays and reef sharks. Bora Bora is particularly good as are the atolls of Tuamotu.

Fiji snorkelling is often excellent right off the beach. Protected lagoons around the islands abound and are often the location of small resorts. Snorkelling in these lagoons is usually excellent. Some of the best spots are in the Yasawa Group and off Kadavu and Taveuni Islands. The only place where snorkelling is not great right off the beach is on Viti Levu, the main island, even at the popular tourist locations of Nadi and the Coral Coast. Here, resorts take guests by boat to the offshore reefs where snorkelling is much better.

The best snorkelling in Tonga is in the Vavau Group which not only has fantastic corals but a good chance to swim with large marine life including rays and even humpback.
Tonga Snorkelling Holidays

Hawaii has great snorkelling around all its islands and most are assessable off the beach. The best spots include Hanamua Bay about half an hour from Waikiki Beach, off the west coast of Maui, particularly around Molokini Island which is accessible by boat, and off the west coast of the Big Island.

The Cook Islands has only a few nice snorkelling spots. The best spot on Rarotonga is off the south east and along the south coast. There's great snorkelling also in the lagoon at Aitutaki.
Cook Islands Snorkelling Resorts

Samoa has a few good snorkelling areas most notably off the east tip of Upolu around the Aleipata Islands and along the south west coast. Savaii only has a few areas where snorkelling is practical and best off the south west coast at Satuiatua Beach.
