Community tourism is a becoming a thriving business in many parts of the South Pacific and is helping the tourist dollar reach rural economies and giving the local people active participation in tourism.

Samoa leads the way in community tourism with its excellent system of beach fales set in beautiful locations within traditional village environments, and owned and operated by local Samoans.

Fiji has a more traditional lifestyle, especially in the highlands and remote outer islands, and visiting these villages is an experience never forgotten. Community tourism is rapidly developing and there are now numerous small beach resorts owned and operated by local Fijian families on village land.


The Cook Islands has several village stay settings on the outer islands of Atiu, Mauke and Mangaia, whilst on Rarotonga there are a growing number of self contained beach bungalows that are owned by local people and help keep the tourist dollar on island.

In Tonga, there are several locally owned guesthouses in Pangai Village on the island of Lifuka in the Ha'apai Group where you become a part of the local community.

Hawaii does not have community tourism as such as traditional villages no longer exist but there are plenty of bed and breakfast homestays available which provides an intimate atmosphere with the local residents.

The remote outer islands of Micronesia offer some of the most traditional lifestyles in the Pacific, especially Yap, Kiribati and Palau where there are colourful homestay tours.
