The best hiking in Tahiti is on the main island of Tahiti, neighbouring Moorea and for avid explorers, on the remote island of Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas.

One of the most scenic trails is from the end of the road on west coast of Tahiti (the main island) to the Te Pari Cliffs, 12 km to the east. The walk passes several outstanding hidden valleys and meanders its way along the stunning coastline. To get to the Te Pari Cliffs will involve an overnight stay along the way. Another great trail on Tahiti leads to the summit of Aorai at over 2000 metres. The 10-km trail is good and there are two huts en-route for staying overnight if you like to take your time and enjoy the best times, sunrise and sunset, up high in the mountains. Less strenuous hikes can be found all around Tahiti, heading up small valley roads where tracks lead higher up in the mountains.

There are several excellent short half day hikes too on neighbouring Moorea Island. The hike from Belvedere Lookout overlooking Cook and Opunohu Bay over to Haapiti on the west coast offers stunning views of the razor sharp mountain peaks. Also worth considering are the Afareaitu waterfall track on the south coast (the waterfall often runs dry from June to November), the Vaiare to Paopao track crossing from the east coast marina to Cooks Bay on the north coast, and the steep climb to the summit of Mt. Rotui which straddles Cook Bay and Opunohu Bay, also on the north coast.
