Vanuatu holidays evolve mostly around the main island of Efate, and in particular along the southern coast in and around the capital, Port Vila. With warm year-round tropical sunshine, some of the world's friendliest and care-free people, nice beaches, excellent restaurants and a couple of unique world-renowned sites, Vanuatu is slowly becoming recognized as one of the South Pacific's best holiday destinations.
In comparison to other South Pacific destinations, Vanuatu's uniqueness is the beautiful setting of Port Vila, the country's small seaside capital town. Where most other destinations tend to focus on secluded beaches away from town centres, Vanuatu attracts tourists into Port Vila which sits on a meandering harbour with beautiful lagoons and several nice beaches. The French influenced restaurants and lively nightlife and kava bars of Port Vila are renowned around the South Pacific. Port Vila has a good selection of hotels, both in downtown Port Vila and on the outskirts where two of the world's leading international hotel chains are located: Le Meridien (Starwood) and Le Lagoon (Warwick).
Boutique style beach resorts are slowly developing outside of Port Vila but there are still only a couple in the outer islands such as Bokissa Eco Resort on Espiritu Santo and White Grass Ocean Resort on Tanna. Most other resorts tend to focus on a mix of relaxation and sightseeing, with scuba diving on Espiritu Santo and an active volcano and kastom villages on Tanna being the main points of interest.
Most resorts offer wedding packages and spa services, and both Le Meridien and Le Lagoon have private 9-hole golf courses. The countries only 18-hole golf course is located west of Port Vila on Male Bay.
With a fantastic harbour in Port Vila and off Luganville in Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu has established itself as a popular yachting destination with overseas yachts arriving during the sailing season between May and October. The same months see the arrival of migratory humpback whales which can sometimes be seen off the coast.
