Tonga holidays are one of the most authentic in the Southern Seas. Known as the friendly islands, Tonga is the last remaining Kingdom in the South Pacific and its people are extremely proud, traditional, and overall amongst the friendliest in the world. Here you'll find lots of secluded coral islands with palm fringed beaches and crystal clear lagoons, incredible limestone waterways ideal for sailing, kayaking, snorkelling and whale watching, and traditional villages with some significant archaeological sites.

With four island groups and over 150 islands in all, a third of the country's 100,000 population live in the capital Nuku'alofa on the main island of Tongatapu. Sunday is a strict day of rest - no flights, no restaurants open and not even taxis to get to church - you'll have to walk! Luckily, the King allows tourists to go for day trips to the offshore islands so work your itinerary around this...

If you have just a week in Tonga, the following itinerary is possible if you have the energy: A full day tour on
Tongatapu will get you to most of the sites on the main island and dine in Nuku'alofa. Spend at least two days in Ha'apai, to unwind and explore the local villages. Two days on Vava'u will get you on two day tours sailing and snorkelling around the limestone causeways. An overnight trip to 'Eua for a good hike along the cliffs and caves to finish your holidays. If you are looking for a truly romantic and secluded getaway, try the remote Niuas with its gorgeous beaches and lagoons.

If you're looking to relax on the beach a little more, then stay at one of the island resorts off Tongatapu for four days and from there do a day tour back to Tongatapu to see the sights and a day island hopping to find secluded beaches and snorkelling. You could then head off to another beach resort on Ha'apai for a couple of days to experience the local culture or go to Vava'u for sailing and snorkelling trips around the limestone causeways.
