Without doubt, the best service to the South Pacific Islands from Europe is with Air New Zealand. Daily connections fly from London to LA with immediate connections to Tahiti (4/week), Cook Islands (3/week), Fiji (2/week), Samoa (1/week connects on to Tonga). All these flights then connect on to New Zealand.
Return flights from London to New Zealand or Australia usually allow one free stopover in the south pacific islands in each destination. It is therefore possible to fly London>LA>Tahiti>NZ>Aus>Fiji>LA>London, or similar routes, for the same fare as LA>Aus>LA. You could fly to Los Angeles with Virgin or BA and transfer to an Air Pacific flight direct to Fiji but there is often a 5 hour or more waiting time at Los Angeles airport, one of the most unfriendly and featureless airports in the world.
Air France operate several direct flights per week from Paris to Tahiti via Los Angeles.
Round-the-World fares are another good option to look into, with Fiji being the main south pacific stop-over, but Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands or Tahiti being other international options. All flights from Asia visit Australia and New Zealand before heading off to North America with one or more stopovers in the South Pacific.
Pacific Passes are offered as specials when purchased with your international ticket and make flying around the south pacific a much more affordable option. Enquire with the local airline for latest specials.
