Step back in time to an era of romance in the South Seas. Robert Louis Stevenson spent the last four years of his short life building his dream house 4 km inland from Apia Harbour in the tropical rainforest of Vailima. His house and many of his books and letters have been preserved with the museum highlight being the smoking room which oozes charm and colonial character.

The landscaped grounds make a pleasant stroll and for those prepared for the steep 20-minute hike up Mt. Vaea, there are great views of the rainforest towards the coast. Two lonely graves can be found at the summit - those of Stevenson and his wife Fanny.

The clapboard houses of downtown Apia and the historical monuments along Mulinuu Peninsula combine to make this a great historical walking tour where much about Samoa can be learned.
