Visit American Samoa
Few people recommend a visit to American Samoa largely from stories they have heard - a polluted harbour, lack of culture, lack of accommodation and tourist infrastructure, lack of beaches and domiance of American commercialism. Whilst some of these points are true, they focus only on the negatives, and American Samoa has several truely outstanding attractions. Foremost is its rich tropical rainforest and National Parks which offer some of the best scenic drives in the South Pacific. Add to this some interesting archaeologiocal sites, several picturesque beaches and the interesting ramshackle of Pago Pago Town and you have the ingrediants for an exciting sightseeing holiday - all without tourists!

The main attraction of American Samoa is the scenic south coast road on Tutuila Island from Pago Pago to Cape Taputapu in the west and from Pago Pago to Cape Matatula in the east. Both are a good half day tour with magnificent mountains lining the coast and some secluded white sandy beaches (although under-currents make swimming dangerous). The tropical rainforest is just minutes walk from the highway and with a guide, you'll get to see some stunning waterfalls as well as some of the best tropical forests in the South Pacific with coastal, lowland and high forest environments. At present, there are no organised day tours around Tutuila
- car hire is readily available and an easy way to get around.
