The Kiribati Islands covers the largest expanse of water in the Pacific, straddling the equator. With only 3 atoll groups, the main atoll is Tarawa which despite its small size is heavily populated. However, it remains one of the most traditional in the pacific, with subsistence farming and fishing, traditional dance and handicraft weaving and long days of idle gatherings in the village hall.

Tarawa atoll is the main centre of all things and is situated in the what was once called the Gilbert Islands in the western region. South Tarawa supports almost a third of the nations population of 87,000, has several hotels and homestay guesthouses, world war II wrecks and some good diving. The Phoenix Islands in the centre of the group, are almost entirely uninhabited.

In the east are the Line Islands where the majority of tourists are drawn to. Christmas Island (also Kiritimati) is the largest coral atoll in the world measuring 388 sq. km and is rich in wildlife. But its greatest appeal is the fantastic game fishing, in particular bonefish.
