The best of the south-west beaches is at Makaha where the mountain views are at their most dramatic, the sands at their widest and the surf at its roughest. Surfing championships are held here throughout winter, and it is second to the north shore as a surf hangout with several condominiums and vacation rentals. In early summer (March-May), you might see humpback whales off the coast. South of Makaha the beaches become progressively less scenic and are the favourite hang-outs of local Hawaiian families. The beaches are nice, with generally good swimming, life guards and is one of the best areas for camping with lots of state beach parks.

On the south point of Oahu, a flat and featureless area west of Honolulu has Oahu's newest beach location. Several man-made cove beaches and marinas have been developed as part of the ambitious Ko Olina Resort complex, creating an ideal spot for swimming protected from the natural surf.
