Hawaii is one of the most isolated group of islands in the world which for sailors is both an appeal and a distraction. It's a long way to Hawaii from mainland USA with nothing but open sea between. Winter storms can bring about rough seas and cyclones are a threat in late summer. Unfortunately there are few sailing charter companies offering extended trips around the islands although you may well hook up with yachties at Honolulu harbour who offer trips on their yachts on a casual basis. Fully serviced marinas are at Honolulu and KoOlina on Oahu, Lihue on Kauai, Honokohau (Kailua) on the Big Island and Lahaina on Maui. Hanalei Bay and Poipu on Kauai are also popular berthing spots.

Renting small hobbie cats is more practical and can be done at most major resorts around the islands.

The picturesque beaches, clear skies and warm sea breeze along the Kona Coast of the Big Island make sailing trips favourable. Plenty of sailing charters operate out of Honokohau Marina a few miles north of Kailua Town.

Hawaii is a popular large cruise destination, although the peak days of the 1950's when cruise ships would visit from the Mainland and Mexico have long passed. Today's itineraries start from Honolulu on Oahu and visit Lihue on Kauai, Lahaina on Maui and Kailua and Hilo on the Big Island. All destinations enable tourists to have a good look around the main attractions of the island on organised day tours. Add-on days on an island can also be arranged according to shipping schedules.


Sailing cruises are very popular from Waikiki Beach, particularly at sunset when the bright lights of the high rise hotels start to twinkle. The stunning Na Pali coastline is an excellent place to enjoy day cruises. Other good sailing cruises depart Lahaina Harbour and Maalaea Harbour on Maui and sailing to the smaller islands of Lanai and Molokai and from Honokohau Marina on the Big Island to explore the remote sandy beaches of the Kohala Coast.
