Hawaii accommodation is the most diverse in the Pacific. There are over a hundred large hotels and condominiums on each of the main islands, including several 1000-room mega golf-resort complexes, a thriving bed and breakfast market, country style inns, lots of private holiday rentals, a few backpacker hostels and an extensive network of excellent National Park camp grounds.

Unfortunately it all comes at a price - Hawaii accommodation is very expensive compared to its South Pacific neighbours, and even by US standards - a simple budget room will cost US$60 and up with a standard room costing at least US$120 a night. For the luxury international resorts, expect to pay US$250 a night for a standard room and perhaps double for beach view.
The large hotel chains are able to offer substantial discounts via the Internet and last minute specials are often posted.

But this doesn't put tourists off - in fact, many places are booked out well in advance and finding that special bed and breakfast or holiday rental in the winter months (Jan-April) can be difficult unless you plan ahead.

The best value for money accommodations are bed and breakfast guesthouses for couples and, if you have a large group or family, one of the many vacation rentals. Both will depend on you having a car to get about, but this is a good think so you can visit independent restaurants, find quiet beaches and generally do your own sightseeing.

Most hawaii beach hotels are high rise, typically with 10-20 stories, and offer fantastic views, although very few actually front the beach itself - most a hundred yards back from the shore, and in the more built up areas of Waikiki (Oahu), Poipu (Kauai), Kihei (Maui) and Kailua-Kona (Big Island), many of the hotels are across the road. Beach views are generally more expensive, although mountain views are equally compelling, and the higher up the building you go, the more you'll pay. The larger resorts usually have their own restaurants and bars, whilst condominiums offer self catering facilities.

Oahu Accommodation, is almost entirely concentrated in Waikiki and its surrounding areas of Ala Moana and Diamond Head. Waikiki Beach Accommodation is mostly in high rise hotel blocks. There are only a couple of hotels outside of Waikiki.

Kauai Accommodation is concentrated around Poipu along the sunny South Coast and more affordable accommodation can be found along the East Coast in the seaside towns of Lihue (Kalapaki Beach), Wailua and Kapa'a. Several large luxury resorts are at the purpose built tourist complex of Princeville on the spectacular North Coast.

Maui Accommodation can be found north of Lahaina Town between Kaanapali and Kapalua on West Maui and at Wailea, south of Kihei Town on south west Maui. Kihei, which has several popular beaches, has a few beach hotels, but the majority of accommodation there is the mountain side of the road, with public access and beach parks beside the shore.

Big Island Accommodation can be found mostly on the Kohala Coast, north of Kailua Town on the sunny west side of the island. Here there are a dozen large resorts including Outrigger and Prince Hotels, as well as the smaller Kona Beach Resort. In Kailua Town, there are plenty of hotels on the coast but most have only tiny cove beaches or rocky seafronts. The best of these is the King Kamuela overlooking the harbour.
