Fiji accommodation is spread around the entire group. The country has an excellent choice of resorts, from budget hostels in the towns, backpacker beach resorts on small islands, specialist surf and dive resorts in key areas and lots of small intimate holiday resorts in areas of outstanding natural beauty. There is something here for everyone. Backpacker dorm beds will cost from F$50 including meals with private bungalows starting at F$100. A standard resort in Nadi will cost from F$100 whilst on the islands, expect to pay at least F$200. Luxury resorts start from about F$400 per night. Most hotels are obliged to sell only at the full rate (the rack rate) and don't offer Internet or direct booking specials - for the best deals try a
south pacific travel specialist. Late minute specials are seldom offered.

There are more than 80 holiday beach resorts in Fiji, many of which offer absolute privacy in a secluded spot and accommodating just a handful of guests. Fiji also boasts some of the most exclusive small resorts in the world which frequently win international awards of excellence. The largest Fiji resort caters for only 400 guests and no hotel building is taller than the surrounding coconut trees.

Most beach resorts in Fiji have plenty of water activities, snorkelling / diving expeditions, kids clubs, swimming pools and sunset bars for cocktails. Fijian feast nights feature at many resorts with traditional dances (mekes) and serenading. Several resorts on Viti Levu host weekly firewalking exhibitions open to the general public. Most resorts also have yaqona drinking (traditional local grog) to bring guests and hosts together for conversations. Nightclubs are not common although the larger resorts sometimes host local live bands, mostly reggae influenced.

Fijians make excellent hosts and are generally very charming to guests and interactive. They are also proud of their culture and will recall local myths, point out natural medicines and show you how they catch a fish and invite you to visit their local village. Fijians are also excellent with children of all ages and will love the attention paid to them by the Fijian resort staff. Their natural charm brings holiday-makers back to Fiji year after year.

Many resorts offer bure accommodation - individual open plan bungalows built from natural materials to reflect the traditional Fijian home. Bures have thatch roofs, high ceilings and wooden beams. Some of the more exquisite bures have bamboo walls and wooden beams held together by woven coconut rope.

There are many backpacker and budget style resorts around the islands, most offering cheap rooms and dormitory beds with shared bathroom facilities.

Nadi Town on the main island of Viti Levu is the hub of travel with the International Airport. There's plenty of accommodation but few attractions and it lacks a decent beach. Set down here for a few days to get a feel of where you want to go and then head out. The backpacker agents and hotel tour desks in Nadi are no real help - they will push you to those places offering them the best commissions and disregard your personal interests.
Accommodation in Nadi Area

The main concentration of accommodation on Viti Levu outside of Nadi is along the southern Coral Coast. Here there are a dozen large resorts all in private locations aimed mostly at package holiday makers and families. There are also several smaller resorts aimed at both wealthy and budget travellers. One of the best backpacker resorts, The Beachouse, is also along this coastline and is a great place to meet fellow travellers and hang out. They even have nice garden bungalows for families or couples.
Accommodation on Coral Coast

Undoubtedly the best choice for beach lovers is the Mamanuca Islands and Yasawa Islands off the west coast of Viti Levu. The Mamanucas has lots of commercial holiday resorts, most of them situated on a small island to itself These resorts cater to the package holiday market with organised water activities so if this is not your thing, you'll need to venture further out.
Accommodation in Mamanuca Islands

The Yasawas Islands offers over 20 small beach bungalow properties along the islands run by local Fijians. Some are great, but unfortunately too many offer a poor service and bad food and many will try and rip you off for boat transfers. For those looking for a little more comfort than the backpacker resorts, a couple of outfits are recommended including Oarsman's Bay and Botaira Beach Resort.
Accommodation in Yasawa Islands

Other great areas to visit where there are plenty of accommodation options include Taveuni in the Northern Islands (great for scuba diving and exploring) and to a lesser extent, Kadavu in the Southern Islands (for scuba diving, surfing and exploring). But, wherever you choose to go, you'll be sure to find accommodation that suits your budget.
