Cook Islands village life has a quiet charm about them with borderless houses and roaming chickens and pigs. The church is the focal point of every village. Subsistence farming and the production of handicrafts are the main activities. Villages on Rarotonga and Aitutaki are all modern but those on the outer islands are a lot more traditional. Some traditional thatch houses (fare) are still in use, especially in the Northern Group


Communal feasts are held for anything that warrants celebration. Weddings and public holidays are such events along with the regular Sunday feasts after a few hours in church. Village life is simple and whilst this charm is appealing to outsiders, the frustrations of the youth are evident. Migration to New Zealand and other parts of the world has left many villages without the soul of its existence.
