There are only a handful of Cook Islands surfing spots, all on the main island of Rarotonga. The most reliable surf is at Avana on the east coast where a small passage opens up. The break is quite short and you will need patience in selecting waves. The surf is not that reliable nor challenging but it is good for beginners although it breaks over reef making it quite dangerous. Opposite the passage is a smaller break which is popular for boogie boarders. If the surf isn't up at Avana, try Rutaki Passage on the south coast or off Club Raro on the north coast. You will need to bring your own board or borrow from one of the locals as there are no rentals on Rarotonga. If you're into surfing, call in at Nikki's Surf Shop on the east end of Avarua Town near Paradise Inn. Nikki is the local surf king and will keep you informed about the local waves. He also has a small shop where you buy second hand boards and sell them back to him (if not wrecked) on your departure.
